Plano is a large city located only 20 northeast of downtown Dallas, TX. With over 286,000 residents, Plano is the ninth largest city in the state by population. European settlers originally moved to the area that is now Plano in the early 1840s, although the city wasn’t incorporated until 1873. Today, Plano serves as the corporate headquarters for many prominent businesses, some of which are among the city’s top employers, including Frito-Lay, Toyota Motor North America, and J.C. Penney. Educational opportunities are also available at Collin College and SMU-in-Plano.
Plano is home to many cultural opportunities and things to do. The Eismann Center for the Performing Arts hosts numerous theatrical productions throughout the year, and visitors who want to learn more about the history of the area may want to check out the Heritage Farmstead Museum. The Shops at Legacy is one of the most popular shopping malls in the area, and there are plenty of specialty shops in Historic Downtown Plano. Despite being an urban community, outdoor recreation is also plentiful at Oak Point Nature Park and Nature Preserve and Arbor Hills Nature Preserve.
Weather conditions in Plano change with the seasons. Winters here are mild, with average daily highs in the 50s in January. Overnight lows fall to an average of 37 throughout the season, and while snowfall is minimal, residents need to be prepared with the right home heating system. A short, warm spring season will lead to a long, hot summer. High temperatures reach into the upper-90s on average, but triple digit thermostat readings are also possible.
